Analysis of Ars Poetica-Archibald MacLeish

Analysis of Ars Poetica- Archibald MacLeish
Analysis of Imagery: The poem is filled with imageries and each line has to be taken into account for analysing imagery. The poem on the whole talks about how a poem should be. It is a reflection of thoughts on "Ars Poetica" by Archibald MacLeish and therefore same title has been retained for this poem. The opening lines carry the image of a ‘globed fruit’. Globed fruit refers to the round shape of the fruit. As a fruit that is spherical in shape carries the palpable part along with seeds, so the poem should have contents that should be felt and easily understood. However, the meaning and content of the poem should not be directly thrown open to the readers. Fruit content is always good to eat; similarly the poem also should have a good feel to read. The usage of ‘as’ to bring a direct comparison with various other images indicates the implication of simile technique. The same technique is applied throughout the poem. The second line “Dumb As old medallions to the thumb” presents the comparison between the age old medallion and the poem. A medallion is an artefact of history. It has truth and innumerable stories inculcated within but at the outset it is a piece of calmness. The loads of greatness remains calm and one has to profoundly think for the comprehension of underlying facts. On par with this medallion, the poet compares the poem. A poem also should carry the truth and innumerable meaning and stories within but it has to remain dumb without throwing the wealth of messages directly to the readers. A reader has to read, relish and cull out the treasury buried in the poem. After the imagery of a ‘globed fruit’ and the ‘old medallion’ the third imagery used by the poet is casement ledges which are worn out by the touch of sleeves for many years. Despite the persistent touch and the damage caused to the casement, it remains silent forever. Such a silence is expected in a poem. Though the quality of silence in a poem is highly doubted still the silence here refers to the immense silence that is borne out of heavy truth. First three images deals with the sensory image of touch and sight while the fourth and fifth imagery are connected with the kinaesthetic movement.  The lines “A poem should be wordless as the flight of birds” is the fourth imagery that presents the comparison of a wordless poem with the flight of birds. The image of flight of birds is kinaesthetic and a reader may wonder about its comparison with the wordless poem. Infact the ‘poem should be wordless’ is confusing as one may wonder that how a poem can be without words. The implied meaning in this context is that a bird’s flight is generally smooth and gliding. A bird can be watched as a whole but its way of flight is not looked separately. The action of flight blends with the bird. Similarly, the words in the poem should give a smooth impression of reading. The word should blend with the poem and the words should disappear in the light of entire poem. The next four lines of the poem deals with the image of moon from the nature. A characteristic feature of the poem is compared with the moon. The motion of the moon cannot be easily deciphered. For an observer, the moon gives an impression as if it moves and climbs in-between the entangled trees leaving the winter leaves. Whereas the moon on the other hand stays in the space and revolves around its own orbit alone. A poem too should take the reader's imagination along with its images. A poem has to be motionless but like a moon that assumes the movement from the observer’s point of view, a poem too has to stimulate the emotions of a reader and it should appeal to the feel. A poem is not a history to tell the facts. This poem is a paradox in a way as it repeatedly mentions how a poem should be.
Analysis of Syntax: The poem consists of couplet and each portion of the initial line contains imagery. The usage of punctuations like comma, full stop and the hyphen helps the reader to sense the images with right comparison. The gerund form “leaving” is used twice to create a progressive effect. The repetition of a pattern occurs in ‘twig by twig’ and ‘memory by memory’. The lines “a poem should be equal to: Not true”, “A poem should not mean: But be” follows a same pattern. The lines 1 & 2 also begin with “a poem should be”. Like a refrain the lines “A poem should be motionless in time, As the moon climbs” is repeated twice. The words like ‘mute’, ‘dumb’, ‘silent’, and ‘wordless’ mean the same but has been syntactically arranged one behind the other pertaining to various comparisons.
Analysis of rhythm: The alliteration of the sound /t/ can be traced in the lines, “twig by twig the night-entangled trees”. Similarly the alliteration of the consonant /m/ sound is evident in the lines “Memory by memory the mind”. The first six lines of the poem have ‘ab’ rhyme pattern.  Many rhymes are consonance in nature based on sounds-for instance mute and fruit, releases and trees. There is also other rhyme pair like grief-leaf, stone-grown, and dumb-thumb etc. However, the poet has used the free verse style and the rhyme pattern is not uniformly applied throughout the poem.

                                    PILGRIM’S PROGRESS
                                     -JOHN BUNYAN.
The author dreamed a dream.  In the dream the hero’s name is Christian.

As the city will go under destruction he decides to go away from there due to fire from the heaven.

He calls his wife and children, but they didn’t come along with him.

Evangelist is the messenger sent by god, who told Christian to go wicket-gate.

Obstinate and pliable are neighbors of Christian.
Obstinate tells Christian no to go, but Christian did not listen.  Pliable goes along with Christian.

Both Christian and pliable falls into a mire - “the slough of despond,” after a lot of struggle pliable came out of the mire.  But due to fear pliable went back to home. Christian continues his journey.

Christian with the help of HELP and continues his journey.

But Christian continues his journey and he finds his roll missing and so he went back to the arbor in search of his roll after finding the roll he continues his journey .
He meets porter named watchful and he informs Christian that the lions are chain and so it is safe to cross at the middle to reach the lodge named beautiful.
Watchful introduces discretion and he calls his family member prudence, piety and charity.
They all invite Christian and piety enquires Christian about his travel and they both talk.
Prudence also had a conversation with Christian about his travel and they both talked.
Prudence also had a conversation with Christian and at last Christian is asked to stay in a chamber named peace.
Morning he was armored by them to protect himself from danger in his further journey.
Charity enquired him about his family.
The next they showed Christian the delectable mountain where the shepherds of celestial city used to bring their cattle’s for gracing.
He comes down the hill and crosses the valley of humiliation with great difficulties.
Where he met appollyon. Appollyon is a monster with the feet like bear, mouth like lion, wings like dragon, body which is covered with scales like fish and fire and smoke coming from his belly.
Appollyon being the king of city of destruction scolds Christian and told him to go back to his city but Christian refused it which leaded to a great sword fight between Christian and appollyon. Christian wins the fight by killing appollyon.
The wound of Christian was cured by the leaves of ‘tree of life’.
The Christian crossed the velley of shadow of death which was very dark with various fearful sounds with great difficulties he realized the dangers that he has crossed only after the sunrise.
Then Christian met faithful and they started to discus about their experience.
Faith started to explain his experience to the hero Christian.

1.                                a woman named Wanton met him but he escaped from her.

2.                                Faithful meets a man named adan andhe asked him to marry his 3 daughters.  The daughters names were 1) Lost of the flesh, 2) Lost of the eyes, 3) the pride of life.
3.                                Faithful also met discontent.

4.                                Faithful meets a man and that man introduces talkative who is good at words but not in action.

Christian with the help of HELP and continues his journey.

Christian meets Mr. Worldly Wiseman who guides Christian to Mount Sinai. There he meets a man named Legality and his son name is Civility and the name of the village is Morality.

Evangelist scolds Christian to take direction to Mount Sinai – instead of too wicket-gate. Now Christian understands that Mr Worldly Wise-man is a cheat.

Christian reaches wicket-gate and good-will receives him and guides towards the interpreter.

Before that Christian tells about his experience till reaching the wicket-gate.

Christian introduces himself to interpreter and asks interpreter to guide him further for his journey.

The interpreter took Christian to a parlour which was full of dust and asked a man to clean the dust.

The interpreter showed 6 images to Christian:

              1. Passion and patient.
              2. The symbol of fire.
              3. Image of an armoured man.
              4. A man in the cage - a man of despair.
              5. Grave man.
              6. The man and the damsel.
Then Christian reached the sepulcher where his burden was loosened and fell down from his shoulder.

Three shining ones appeared to Christian.

First one forgave his sins and second clothed him with raiment and third set a mark in his forehead and gave him a seal to reach celestial city.

Simple, Sloth, Presumption were afraid of lion standing near them and Simple says that he has no fear. Sloth requests for some more sleep and Presumption says that whatever he says is correct; every man has to stand with his own decision.

Now Christian meets Formalist and Hypocrisy who passes wicket gate with out legal permission.

Christian advices them but they didn’t listen to him and chooses the path of danger and destruction and they both were doomed.

But Christian chooses the path of difficulty and puts all his efforts to climb the hill and in between he takes rest in a pleasant Arbour and falls asleep.

Suddenly he awakes and continues his journey to the top of the hill and on the way he met Mistress and Timorous. They say that there are couples of lions and they both were running down the hill.

But Christian continues his journey and again raches back to Arbour and felt asleep and he lost his roll and he Searches and Scolds himself and he got his roll and continues his journey.

He meets porter named Watchful and he says tyo Christian that the lions are chained and he safely reaches the lodge.  Lodge name is beautiful.

Watchful introduces discretion and he calls his family members Prudence, Piety and Charity.

They all invite Christian and piety enquires Christian about his travel and they both talk.

Prudence also had a conversation with Christian and at last Christian is asked to stay in a chamber named Peace.

Morning he was taken to Armoured to protect himself from danger for the forth coming journey.

Charity enquires Christian about his family.
Next day Christian was shown the defectable mountain which is near the heaven.

He comes down the hill and crossed the valley of humiliation with great difficulties.

He meets Appollyon. Appollyon is a monster with the feet like bear, mouth like lion, wing like dragon, and smoke coming from his belly.

Appollyon being the king of city of destruction scolds Christian and they had a conversion over the concept of Princess and Lord.   Their conversion leads to sword fight between Christian and Appollyon and at alst Appollyon dies and Christian had won.

The Christian was wounded and gets refreshed with the leaves of the “Tree of Life”.

The Christian has to cross the valley of shadow of path to reach celestial city.  With great difficultiy he starting crossing it was dark and he didn’t kenw how he crossed but when he had corssed it was sunrise.

Now Christian meets faithful and they started discussing and faithful tells his experience.

Now talkative talks against religious belief and both Christian and faithful makes comments on talkative.

Christian and Faithful crosses the wilderness.  Suddenly Evangelist comes behind them and tells about the difficulty while crossing the Vanity - fair.

Vanity fair is meant for plays, games, cheat, fools etc. both Christian and Faithful were least bothered about the fair, but unfortunately, Faithful died.

Christian meets Hopeful and they both crosses the plain ‘cose’.  Demas invites Christian and Hopeful to Silver mine which destroyed many lives but they both didn’t go.
Christian and Hopeful had a short conversation of “Pillar of Salt” and they take this Statue as a example for the trust on god.

Christian and Hopeful chooses the path Meadow which was soft and pleasant to walk.

Christian and Hopeful were much tied and they slept, the King of the place Giant came before them and arrested them and putted in jail ie. Imprison.

Christian and Hopeful prayed god sincerely and he has a lock called promise through which he could easily open all doors of doubting castle and both Christian and Hopeful escaped.

They reach Delectable Mountain and four shepherds were there.  There names were 1) Knowledge, 2) Experience, 3) Watchful and 4) Sincere.

First information was the flatterer and should be careful about the land known as enchanting ground.

The shepherd offers a guide map and also informs to go fast.

Christian and Hopeful meets Ignorance.  They ask ignorance whether he has taken the right path but they came to know that he came illegally.

Christian again meets the Wanton Professor who is bounded by deadly sins.  He is reminded of little – faith who lost his money and lamented.

Christian, Hopeful falls prey for the flatterer’s words they are re-directed from the right path.  True Apostle rescues them.

After the little conversion with Atheist they cross the enchanting ground to keep away from falling asleep.  They talk about blessings of Christ and religion.

Finally they enter into the country of Beulah, a City of Marriage and happiness.  They enjoy the hospitality and get prepared to enter into the celestial city by crossing the river of death.

Christian with much struggle crosses the river of death with the help of Hope.  They are welcomed with warm note and they are transfigured into golden colour.

Finally Christian sees the Ignorance being thrown into the hell through the side path.  Since he had no parchment in his hand.

Semantic change

A language can have sound change, morphological change, synctatic change, Lexical and semantic change.
Semantic change
The change in the meaning is always a step by step process and it involves many phenomena lile
1.      Semantic broadening
2.      Semantic narrowing
3.      Amelioration
4.      Weakening
Semantic broadening is a process in which the meaning of a word becomes more general or more inclusive than its historically earlier form.
Eg: Bird –Small fowl (Old meaning)-‘any winged and feathered creature (new meaning)
Aunt- Father’s sister (Old meaning) – ‘Father or mother’s sister’ (new meaning)
Semantic narrowing is the process in which the meaning of word becomes less general or less inclusive than its historically earlier meaning.
Eg: hound – any dog (Old meaning) – ‘a hunting breed’(new meaning)
Meat- any type of food (Old meaning) – ‘flesh of an animal (new meaning)
Amelioration is a process where word becomes more positive or favourable. On the other hand the opposite change can also happen and it is called as Pejoration.
Eg. for Amelioration- Pretty – ‘tricky, sly cunning’ (Old meaning) – attractive (new meaning)
Eg. For Pejoration- Silly- Happy, Prosperous (Old meaning) – foolish (New meaning)
Weakening of meaning also happens due to the propensity of human beings to exaggerate.
Eg:  soon meaning immediately now simply means ‘in the near future’.
Semantic shift is a process in which a word loses its former meaning and takes on a new but often related meaning.
Eg: Immoral –not customary (Old meaning) – unethical (new meaning)
At times even a series of semantic shift can happen.
Eg: Hearse- Triangle harrow(Original)-triangle frame for church candles-device that holds candle over a coffin-framework on which curtains hung over a coffin or tomb-was used to refer coffin itself and finally the current sense denotes the vehicle used to carry coffin.

Review on Honore De Balzac’s Sarassine

Due to the incessant reference to Roland Barthes work on Balzac’s Sarassine, a curiosity arouse in me to read the text before reading the criticism by Barthes. My search was fulfilled by Feedbooks online that provided the translation of Sarassine by Clara Bell. The work runs to thirty five pages and one can read the work in single setting. The translation is impeccable with a clear flow of words and thereby it becomes a great joy to read the text. The striking part of the text is the introduction of Sarassine in the middle of the text. The initial part depicts the French society in 1830s and at the same time it does not miss to lead the readers towards the story plot of Sarassine in whose name the text is labelled. As the story of Sarassine began and when i was half way through, i could make a wild guess about the story as i have earlier watched the movie starring Arjun directed by Bharathiraja. Though I could vaguely collect the title of the movie as it was not a box office hit still i remembered the story which was very different from the traditional tamil movie story line. A boy will be posed as heroine in the movie following which all sorts of trouble will arise for the boy. A series of murder takes place and the actor Arjun appears to solve the case. The suspense will be revealed at the end. In the movie a girl has played the role both as a boy and girl. Now i can understand the source of the movie. The movie was not an exact copy or the adaptation of this work Sarassine. So, both the written text and the movie are unique in their ways. It is pleasure to read the text and simultaneously it is a thrill to watch the movie devoid of knowledge about the story of the text. This story no doubt has depicted the fall of a great artist but it is interesting to read an unusual story. Artist may fall as he is a human but the art is eternal which will sing his praise for ages. Balzac is also a true artist.

Uma Parameswaran’s Trishanku and other writings

People in general state that there is no use in crying over the spilt milk. Past is always considered as dead and pondering about it is perpetually considered as futile. However, here comes Uma Parameswaran’s Trishanku and other writings to break the notion. This work of a diaspora writer cannot be read for the contemporary issues as it deals with the first set of diaspora people who moved from India to Canada. Despite the fact that the text deals with the previous set of immigrants, still it cannot be ignored. The text provides the base to learn about the first set of immigrants and provides a link to learn about the state of current immigrants. Apart from the theme of nostalgia, this work has universal themes too. For instance Usha’s lamentation for the unborn child suits any mother, To quote,
It is nature’s way, they said,
To throw out those unfit to see
The light of day.
And they dropped him in a white-lid jar
And carried him away.
Threw him down the incinerator perhaps,
Flames sucking at those unformed lips
That never will suckle here,
My son, heir to the heritage of the solar kings. (p.31)
Any human being with soul will be moved to shed tears after reading the above poem. This collection is also unique in literary genre. Uma has broken the boundaries by compiling poems, short prose and excerpt from a novel. Her new attempt is worth reading. This collection is unique and deserves kudos as it appeals to heart and soul. No wonder many pages make us suffer and choke our throat in tears. The text treats your emotion.

Mulk Raj Anand’s “Lajwanti and other stories”

The moment Anand name is uttered, an individual gets struck with the novels like Untouchable and Coolie. Even the Wikipedia has listed only his novels and autobiographies. I am quite surprised to see the absence of this collection of short stories. However, after reading this text, I found this collection quite interesting as this cannot be stereotypically labelled unlike other Anand novels which is always studied as those that deals only with the issues of so called ‘untouchables’. The collection deals with various issues of women, division in society based on class and the religion and again of course the Dalit issue is not exempted. A theoretical approach including feminism, Marxism and subaltern studies can be applied to these short stories. Even a semiotic approach to the text is possible as it involves plenty of symbols and imageries. The signifier and the signified of the text require attention to comprehend the real crux of the story. The author’s versatile capacity is evident in this collection though a few has criticised this collection to resemble Hindi teleserials. In short, the collection cannot be merely ignored as a simple text. It has rich sources for knowledgeable discussion and deserves reading.
