                                    PILGRIM’S PROGRESS

The author dreamed a dream.  In the dream the hero’s name is Christian.

As the city will go under destruction he decides to go away from there due to fire from the heaven.

He calls his wife and children, but they didn’t come along with him.

Evangelist is the messenger sent by god, who told Christian to go wicket-gate.

Obstinate and pliable are neighbors of Christian.

Obstinate tells Christian no to go, but Christian did not listen.  Pliable goes along with Christian.

Both Christian and pliable falls into a mire - “the slough of despond,” after a lot of struggle pliable came out of the mire.  But due to fear pliable went back to home. Christian continues his journey.

Christian with the help of HELP and continues his journey.

Christian meets Mr. worldly Wiseman who guides Christian to Mount Sinai.

He to Christian to reach the city named morality where he could see a man called legality, and his son civility.

EVANGELIST scolds Christian for taking diversion from his path towards wicket-gate.

From EVANGELIST Christian understood that Mr. Worldly Wiseman is cheat.

 Christian reached wicket-gate and good-will welcomed him and guides him towards interpreter.

Before that Christian tells about this experience till reaching the wicket-gate.

Christian introduces himself to interpreter and asks interpreter to guide him further for his journey.

The interpreter took Christian to a parlour which was full of dust and asked a man to clean dust.

The interpreter showed 6 images to Christian:

              1. passion and patient.

              2. the symbol of fire.

              3. image of an armed man.

              4. a man in the cage-a man of despair.

              5. grave man.

              6. the man and the damsel.

Then Christian reached the sepulcher where his burden was loosened and fell down from his shoulder.

Three shining ones appeared before Christian.

The first one forgave his sins and second clothed him with raiment and third set a mark in his forehead and gave him a seal to reach celestial city.

Simple, sloth, presumption was not aware of lion standing near them and simple says that he has no fear. Sloth requests for some more sleep and presumption says tat whatever he says is correct; every man has to stand with his own decision.

Now Christian meets formalist and hypocrisy who passes wicket gate with out legal permission.

Christian advises them but they didn’t listen to him and chooses the path of danger and destruction and they both were doomed.

But Christian chooses the path of difficulty and puts all his efforts to climb the hill and in between he takes rest in a pleasant arbor and falls asleep.

Suddenly he awakes and continues his journey to the top of the hill and on the way he met mistress and timorous .they said that there are two lions and so they were running down the hill.

But Christian continues his journey and he finds his roll missing and so he went back to the arbor in search of his roll after finding the roll he continues his journey .

He meets porter named watchful and he informs Christian that the lions are chain and so it is safe to cross at the middle to reach the lodge named beautiful.

Watchful introduces discretion and he calls his family member prudence, piety and charity.

They all invite Christian and piety enquires Christian about his travel and they both talk.

Prudence also had a conversation with Christian about his travel and they both talked.

Prudence also had a conversation with Christian and at last Christian is asked to stay in a chamber named peace.

Morning he was armored by them to protect himself from danger in his further journey.

Charity enquired him about his family.

The next they showed Christian the delectable mountain where the shepherds of celestial city used to bring their cattle’s for gracing.

He comes down the hill and crosses the valley of humiliation with great difficulties.

Where he met appollyon. Appollyon is a monster with the feet like bear, mouth like lion, wings like dragon, body which is covered with scales like fish and fire and smoke coming from his belly.

Appollyon being the king of city of destruction scolds Christian and told him to go back to his city but Christian refused it which leaded to a great sword fight between Christian and appollyon. Christian wins the fight by killing appollyon.

The wound of Christian was cured by the leaves of ‘tree of life’.

The Christian crossed the velley of shadow of death which was very dark with various fearful sounds with great difficulties he realized the dangers that he has crossed only after the sunrise.

Then Christian met faithful and they started to discus about their experience.

Faith started to explain his experience to the hero Christian.

1.                                a woman named Wanton met him but he escaped from her.

2.                                Faithful meets a man named adan andhe asked him to marry his 3 daughters.  The daughters names were 1) Lost of the flesh, 2) Lost of the eyes, 3) the pride of life.

3.                                Faithful also met discontent.

4.                                Faithful meets a man and that man introduces talkative who is good at words but not in action.

But Christian continues his journey and again raches back to Arbour and felt asleep and he lost his roll and he Searches and Scolds himself and he got his roll and continues his journey.

He meets porter named Watchful and he says tyo Christian that the lions are chained and he safely reaches the lodge.  Lodge name is beautiful.

Watchful introduces discretion and he calls his family members Prudence, Piety and Charity.

They all invite Christian and piety enquires Christian about his travel and they both talk.

Prudence also had a conversation with Christian and at last Christian is asked to stay in a chamber named Peace.

Morning he was taken to Armoured to protect himself from danger for the forth coming journey.

Charity enquires Christian about his family.

Next day Christian was shown the defectable mountain which is near the heaven.

He comes down the hill and crossed the valley of humiliation with great difficulties.

He meets Appollyon. Appollyon is a monster with the feet like bear, mouth like lion, wing like dragon, and smoke coming from his belly.

Appollyon being the king of city of destruction scolds Christian and they had a conversion over the concept of Princess and Lord.   Their conversion leads to sword fight between Christian and Appollyon and at alst Appollyon dies and Christian had won.

The Christian was wounded and gets refreshed with the leaves of the “Tree of Life”. 

The Christian has to cross the valley of shadow of path to reach celestial city.  With great difficultiy he starting crossing it was dark and he didn’t kenw how he crossed but when he had corssed it was sunrise.

Now Christian meets faithful and they started discussing and faithful tells his experience.

Now talkative talks against religious belief and both Christian and faithful makes comments on talkative.

Christian and Faithful crosses the wilderness.  Suddenly Evangelist comes behind them and tells about the difficulty while crossing the Vanity - fair.

Vanity fair is meant for plays, games, cheat, fools etc. both Christian and Faithful were least bothered about the fair, but unfortunately, Faithful died.

Christian meets Hopeful and they both crosses the plain ‘cose’.  Demas invites Christian and Hopeful to Silver mine which destroyed many lives but they both didn’t go.

Christian and Hopeful had a short conversation of “Pillar of Salt” and they take this Statue as a example for the trust on god.

Christian and Hopeful chooses the path Meadow which was soft and pleasant to walk.

Christian and Hopeful were much tied and they slept, the King of the place Giant came before them and arrested them and putted in jail ie. Imprison.

Christian and Hopeful prayed god sincerely and he has a lock called promise through which he could easily open all doors of doubting castle and both Christian and Hopeful escaped.

They reach Delectable Mountain and four shepherds were there.  There names were 1) Knowledge, 2) Experience, 3) Watchful and 4) Sincere. 

First information was the flatterer and should be careful about the land known as enchanting ground.

The shepherd offers a guide map and also informs to go fast.

Christian and Hopeful meets Ignorance.  They ask ignorance whether he has taken the right path but they came to know that he came illegally.

Christian again meets the Wanton Professor who is bounded by deadly sins.  He is reminded of little – faith who lost his money and lamented.

Christian, Hopeful falls prey for the flatterer’s words they are re-directed from the right path.  True Apostle rescues them.

After the little conversion with Atheist they cross the enchanting ground to keep away from falling asleep.  They talk about blessings of Christ and religion.

Finally they enter into the country of Beulah, a City of Marriage and happiness.  They enjoy the hospitality and get prepared to enter into the celestial city by crossing the river of death.

Christian with much struggle crosses the river of death with the help of Hope.  They are welcomed with warm note and they are transfigured into golden colour.

Finally Christian sees the Ignorance being thrown into the hell through the side path.  Since he had no parchment in his hand.
